Big C little c

I’ve been reading a bit more about the scientific explanations we currently have for creative. What makes someone creative? Is everyone capable of creativity? How do we define an act of creativity?

Among these questions one concept stood out to me. The concept of “big C” Creativity and “little c” creativity. Big C Creativity is defined as creativity with a purpose. It solves difficult problems that provide great social value. Something like the invention of the airplane falls in this category.

Little c creativity on the other hand is related to creativity that occurs out of a day to day necessity. It’s valuable to the person who creates the work but not necessarily valuable to society as a whole. Something like a daily journal or tweaking a recipe based on ingredients on hand would be best categorized as little c creativity.

Both types of creativity are useful and important.
